A tragic incident occurred in the village of 108 Seven-R, where a woman, Umm Kulthum, was allegedly set on fire by her in-laws. She died while being transferred to Lahore for medical treatment.

Umm Kulthum, 47, married to Sajjad Ahmed since 2010 and the mother of one daughter, was reportedly doused in kerosene and set ablaze after being subjected to physical abuse.

She was first admitted to Teaching Hospital Sahiwal, but due to her critical condition, she was referred to Lahore. She passed away on the way.

According to the FIR, the incident followed a dispute between Umm Kulthum and her sisters-in-law, Nadia and Saadia, days earlier.

Police have registered a case against her father-in-law, Sardar Ahmed, and her sisters-in-law under serious charges. The accused are currently on interim bail as investigations continue.

District Police Officer Faisal Shahzad has taken notice of the case, ordering an immediate and thorough investigation.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has also sought a detailed report from the Regional Police Officer, Sahiwal. Following the chief minister’s directives, charges under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act have been added to the case.

Police have stated that further details will emerge as the investigation proceeds.

Torture of women at the hands of their in-laws is no uncommon in Punjab.
