SHC issues notices on karo kari

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court issued notices on Thursday to the Sindh home secretary, SHO Thatta and others for June 11 in a case concerning the protection of a newly-wed couple declared karo-kari by their parents.

The petitioners, Asma and Muhammad Rizwan, approached the SHC, seeking protection from becoming victims of honor killing. Counsel Jawed Chattari and Farah Awan submitted before the court that their clients solemnized the marriage on their own free will, without any pressure and coercion. Asma’s father, Moula Bux, lodged an FIR (53/2008 U/S 365-B, 34/506 (2) PPC) at the Gharo Police Station, naming her spouse, Muhammad Rizwan, and his family members responsible for kidnapping his daughter. They contended that the couple’s parents had declared them karo kari and attempted to kill them, while police is also harassing them.

They prayed the court to provide protection to the petitioners and to quash an FIR lodged against them out of enmity. The division bench, comprising Chief Justice Azizullah M Memon and Justice Khalid Ali Z. ppi
