Harassment victim stages sit-in

HYDRABAD: A nursing student of Peoples University of Medical and Health Sciences for Women, Nawabshah, who has accused some officials of the varsity of harassing her, staged a sit-in protest outside Nawabshah Press Club on Thursday.

Parveen Rind, who is doing her house job in the varsity’s teaching hospital, was joined in her protest by the local leaders of many political and nationalist parties.

She told DSP Sultan Ahmed Chandio, who visited the place of protest to tell her record her statement before an inquiry committee of the varsity, that she would not end her protest unless FIR is lodged against the alleged culprits. She refused to accept the inquiry committee, doubting its impartiality.

The student has blamed three officials of the University for trying to beat her to death in her hostel room on her refusal to surrender to their alleged unethical demands.

According to her, she was beaten by the hostel warden Aatiqa Dhamrah and Parveen Dahiri at the behest of Nursing School Director, Dr Ghulam Mustafa Rajput.

Rind said, she submitted a complaint against the director to the vice chancellor four months ago but no action has been taken against anyone.

In a video, which she shared on the social media, Rind showed the bruises on her arms which were allegedly caused by those officials whom she blamed for harassing her since her first year in the institution. “No female student is safe in the university’s hostel,” she maintained.

The student hails from Dadu district. On Wednesday she tried to register an FIR at A-section police station where she was accompanied by a local leader of Pakistan Peoples Party, Ali Nawaz Rind. However, the police handed her a letter to corroborate her allegations with a medical report.

Meanwhile, in a press release the university’s registrar rebutted allegations of Rind and denied that any incident of harassment had taken place at the campus hostel.

Qamrunissa Dhamrah, president of PPP ladies wing, Shaheed Benazirabad, said while talking to the media that the police should register her complaint and take action against te officials.

Prof Dr Gulshan Memon, vice chancellor of the university, has formed a committee headed by the director students affairs, Dr Farida Waggan, to conduct an inquiry in the case.

Prof Qurban Ali Rahu and Associate Prof, Dr Fozia Shahani are the members of the committee which has been asked to submit report on daily basis.
