Grenades hurled at girls’ hostel in Peshawar

PESHAWAR: Unidentified militants attacked the girls’ hostel of a private university in the University Town areas with hand grenades while a roadside bomb went off near Kala Mandai on the GT Road on Friday.

Police said unidentified attackers fired two handgrenades from a grenade gun that landed in the girls’ hostel of the Gandhara University on the Jamaluddin Afghani Road in the University Town.

The explosives damaged the gate of the hostel but did not cause any casualty. The area is sensitive as a number of diplomatic missions and offices of international NGOs and educational institutions are located there.

In another incident, militants triggered a roadside bomb near Kala Mandai with a remote-control device Friday afternoon. The blast, however, did not result in any casualty or damage to property.

Police said the explosives were concealed in a pot and were planted to target police vehicles. Heavy police contingents later searched the area to find more explosive devices. Meanwhile, two persons were wounded in a blast in the compressor room of a CNG station near the General Bus Stand. Police said mechanical fault caused the explosion at the CNG station.
