ISLAMABAD, Nov 11: Supreme Court Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar on Tuesday took suo motu notice of a reported judgement by a jirga in Shikarpur giving a seven-year girl in marriage to a 15-year-old boy for settling a dispute between their families. Justice Dogar sought a report from the city’s police chief within a week.

According to reports, a jirga in Lal Khan Jatoi village of Shikarpur decided a ‘karo-kari’ dispute on Sunday by ordering that the minor girl be married to the boy.

The jirga, reportedly convened by tribal elders Maashi Khan Jatoi and Bajhi Khan Jatoi, declared one Jhando Jatoi guilty of having illicit relations with the wife of another Jatoi named Saindad.

The jirga ordered Gajjan Jatoi to give his daughter Hajul in marriage to Shahoo Jatoi, son of Saindad, as compensation on behalf of his brother Jhando Jatoi and pay a fine of Rs100,000. Later, nikah was solemnised and the little girl was sent to Saindad’s house.
