Media workers protest abduction of colleague’s teenage niece

Journalists and other media workers held a noisy demonstration outside the Piryalo Press Club on Thursday over abduction of their professional colleague’s 17-year-old niece from his home by a group of armed men.

Narrating his family’s ordeal, the journalist told the police and media personnel that five armed men intruded his home, located in a village falling within the Garhi Mori UC, on Friday night and held all those sleeping inside at gun point. They then took away his niece by a car they had parked outside, he added.

He said she and her parents had been receiving threats from three unknown persons for some time. He said the family came to know through the CDR (call data record) that two of the callers were residents of the Dubar area of Rohri taluka and the third one was a resident of Shikarpur district.

The Priyalo police said they were investigating the matter from different angles to reach a conclusion and, in the meantime, making efforts to recover the girl.

The journalist said that Khairpur SSP Samiullah Soomro was contacted but he said he was currently in Ghotki to look after his additional charge. He quoted the SSP as telling him that he would get the FIR registered upon his return to Khairpur.

Meanwhile, the protesting media personnel have appealed to the provincial government and senior police officials to help recover the girl without any delay. They demanded that the abductors should also be arrested at the earliest.
